Its the year 2010 and the genre that we all once knew and grew up to is now dead..well maybe not dead but more like in a
retirement home. Hip-Hop as we once called it is nothing but a shadow of what it once was sort of like an athlete past his
prime who refuses to leave the game because he thinks he's got one more good game left in him, that's where hip-hop is at
this point.
what was once a way to express your self through spoken word, fashion as well as dance has now been taken over
by the mainstream masses, "music ain't the same!" is what people all round say, what's the problem with Hip-hop? well there's
numerous problems, the over done remixes (5 people from the south and 4 usual suspects from the east) the manufactured
acts as well as novelty acts and then we cant forget the "they'll give anybody a damn contract" fake ass rappers.
Believe it or not Hip Hop wasn't always like this. It was 1987 when my god sister introduced me to Hip Hop,
(might go back further for some of you readers) it was during this time when rappers such as Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh just
to name a few had the radios and cars stereos on fire.
When names such as Heavy D and the Boyz was a house hold name
( do any of you young readers know who Heavy D and The Boyz are?)
Not only were the male rappers repping Hip-Hop to the fullest we also had the females doing their thing on the mic,
Salt N Pepa,
Queen Latifah
and MC Lyte just to name a few.
It was also during this time when a sound known back then as "The new jack swing" came into hip hop, songs that would
go on to become classics were all produced by super producer of the 80's late 90s Teddy Riley
Call him the "puff daddy" of the 80s, while hip hop was a fresh sound there would also be may groups who would leave
their mark in the game, groups such Kid N Play,
New edition
, Guy
and TLC (whom was just starting out at the time) just to name a few.
As the years would past many artist both male and females would appear and leave their marks in Hip hop music
that
would began to shape what was yet to come.
While many would agree that the 90s was a great time for hip-hop despite the loss of two legends in the Notorious BIG and
Tupac,( if Hip Hop was an athlete he was in his prime), The millennium would see a tidal wave of south artist joining Hip-Hop
names such as Ludacris and T.I
And then there were guys like soulja Boy and Lil Wayne
whom would capatilize on the online market and explode into television as well as the mass media.
By 2010 Hip Hop is in need of a quick death and reincarnation all in once
what was once fresh and new is now old and recycled
Its also when where things we've seen in past come back as a new image (no direct comparison, just making a point)
While I didn't write this blog to bash any of these artist or even make any type of comparison to any one, I'm just simply
saying what every one of us who knows good music when they hear it and who grew up listening to what we now consider
classic'sis thinking, Hip Hop needs to be restarted over again well maybe rejuvenated again is more like it....
Besides when little girls start singing the lyrics to this girls song
You gonna say "we have a problem!" then?
